Hello there! This is a stream of my online activity for archival purposes. No real content can be found here. Please see The StrategyBlog for my commentary, or follow me on Twitter if you find me interesting.

This post is not in its original format. It was recovered from a corrupted database of my old blog entries. The post date is incorrect, and relevant tags and categories were lost.

Recently I activated a “Packet 8 Softalk Office” extension only to discover that the “Packet8 Softalk Virtual Office” application crashes when disconnecting a call in Windows Vista. This is not an intermittent issue, but a recurring one that happens on multiple computers.

I like the flexibility that the softphone gives me and my employees, so I began to look for alternatives. Through some creative use of Google I found that the “Packet8 Softalk Virtual Office” is simply a customized version of the X-Light application. You can even see 8×8 Inc listed as a customer of Counter Path at http://www.counterpath.com/customers.html .

You are probably more interested in the actual steps to solve the problem with the faulty branding, so here you go:

  1. Download Counter Path’s X-Lite at http://www.counterpath.com/x-lite.html&active=5
  2. Install the application normally
  3. Use the following SIP Account settings:
    • User Name: <Same as Softphone Username>
    • Password: <Same as Softphone Password>
    • Authorization User Name: <Same as User Name>
    • Domain: vo.packet8.net
    • Check “Register with domain to receive incoming calls” (should be already checked)
    • Change “Set outbound via” to the “domain” option
    • Change dialing plan to: x.T|91xxxxxxxxxx|9011x.T|9x.T|x.T;match=1;pre=”tel:+”
    • [Presence Tab] Change mode to “Disabled”
  4. Restart your computer

You can now make and receive calls in X-Lite or the Packet8 softphone and as a bonus, the Packet8 app no longer crashes!
